Improv Blues
02:26
|
|||
It sounded so good in my mind,
best thought I ever had.
Sounded so good in my mind —
so why is it so bad?
Soon as I said it,
oh, how I want to take it back.
I put the patterns in my fingers,
why won't they come out?
Put the patterns in my fingers,
where are they now?
Shoulda listened to myself
before making noise out loud.
Can’t do what came before me,
can’t even play blues.
Can’t do what came before me,
gotta make up something new.
I'll make it weird and complicated
‘cause easy is too hard to do.

Needing to Consider
02:12
|
|||
I watch men handle
numbers,
letters,
sounds, and
colors
without needing to consider
this simmering, simmering,
filling-and-unfilling
pocket of my body
that I might not ever use,
or how to shape my life if I do.
Or how to shape a life if I do.
Some of them make me want to,
and I become distracted
from building what they have.

Not my way of doing things,
not my father’s way of doing things,
not my middle sister’s way of doing things,
not my youngest sister’s way of doing things,
but your own way,
your father’s way,
your mother’s way,
an other’s way,
an unfamiliar way —
a perfectly fine way,
a way I miss
now that we’re apart,
because it came
from a good heart.

Feet off the Kneelers
02:47
|
|||
God help me stop my overreaching,
practice praying over preaching,
keep it simple, keep it small,
or else I’ll do no good at all.
Don’t write a song you can’t perform,
don’t hike alone if there’s a storm,
don’t mention math you can’t explain,
don’t battle if you haven’t trained.
I grew up with big books on shelves,
unending dreams of future selves,
but mourning past ones, I implore:
God let me love the present more.
